KNEE SURGERY GLASGOW
Preparing for Knee Surgery
Careful preparation prior to surgery can help everything go smoothly and ensures the best possible recovery. Below, you’ll find key steps and information to help you get ready for your operation.
Before Your Surgery
Pre-Assessment
Before your operation, you’ll attend a pre-assessment appointment. This visit allows us to:
Review your medical history, medications, and allergies
Perform any necessary blood tests, ECGs, or imaging
Discuss your anaesthetic plan and pain management options
Please bring a list of all your current medications, including over-the-counter or herbal supplements.
Medications
Some medications may need to be stopped before surgery (for example, blood thinners, diabetes medication, or certain anti-inflammatories). Our team will advise you exactly which medications to continue or pause.
Smoking & Alcohol
Stopping smoking and reducing alcohol intake before surgery can significantly improve healing and reduce complications. If you’d like support, please let us know — we can help.
Fasting Instructions
You’ll receive clear guidance about when to stop eating and drinking before your procedure.
Typically, you should not eat solid food for 6 hours and should stop clear fluids 2 hours before your scheduled time — but follow the exact instructions given to you, as they may vary.
