KNEE SURGERY GLASGOW

Preparing for Knee Surgery

Careful preparation prior to surgery can help everything go smoothly and ensures the best possible recovery. Below, you’ll find key steps and information to help you get ready for your operation.

Before Your Surgery

Pre-Assessment

Before your operation, you’ll attend a pre-assessment appointment. This visit allows us to:

  • Review your medical history, medications, and allergies

  • Perform any necessary blood tests, ECGs, or imaging

  • Discuss your anaesthetic plan and pain management options

Please bring a list of all your current medications, including over-the-counter or herbal supplements.

Medications

Some medications may need to be stopped before surgery (for example, blood thinners, diabetes medication, or certain anti-inflammatories). Our team will advise you exactly which medications to continue or pause.

Smoking & Alcohol

Stopping smoking and reducing alcohol intake before surgery can significantly improve healing and reduce complications. If you’d like support, please let us know — we can help.

Fasting Instructions

  • You’ll receive clear guidance about when to stop eating and drinking before your procedure.

  • Typically, you should not eat solid food for 6 hours and should stop clear fluids 2 hours before your scheduled time — but follow the exact instructions given to you, as they may vary.

The Day of Surgery

What to Bring

  • Your admission letter or hospital paperwork

  • A list of your medications

  • Comfortable clothing and toiletries

  • Any mobility aids you normally use (e.g. crutches, walking stick)

Please leave valuables and jewellery at home.

Arrival

Arrive at the hospital at the time stated on your admission letter. Our nursing team will help you settle in, check your details, and prepare you for theatre.

Anaesthetic & Surgery

Your anaesthetist will discuss your anaesthetic plan and answer any last-minute questions before the operation begins. You’ll be closely monitored throughout.

After Your Surgery

Recovery

  • You’ll wake up in the recovery area, where our nursing staff will monitor you closely before transferring you back to the ward.

  • Pain control and comfort are our priority — please let us know if you feel uncomfortable.

Mobilisation & Physiotherapy

  • Getting moving early helps prevent complications and speeds up recovery.

  • Our physiotherapy team will guide you safely through your first movements and exercises.

Discharge & Follow-Up

Before you go home, we’ll provide:

  • Wound care and dressing instructions

  • A prescription for pain relief (if needed)

  • A physiotherapy or rehabilitation plan
